After twenty years as a brick-and-mortar shop, Marfa Book Co. opened its first experimental pop-up at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles on February 4th. The store launched in conjunction with Grandfather: A Pioneer Like Us, an exhibition by the groundbreaking Swiss curator Harald Szeemann, and will feature select publishers in the fields of poetry, art, photography and criticism.

The pop-up features thirty-four of our favorite presses from the fields of poetry, literature, art, photography and translation. Following a model we have adapted from Harald Szeemann’s emphasis on individual mythologies as the criteria for inclusion in his early, ground-breaking exhibitions, we have partially disregarded genre as a category for organization and have instead focused on the press as the source of myth and distinction. Presses are presented according to an intuitive logic whereby different fields of activity are brought into close proximity and unexpected combinations are possible.

Presses included: Archipelago Books, Belladonna*, Canarium, Capricious, Dancing Foxes, Dorothy, Editorial RM, Exact Change, Fundacion Cisneros, Fonograf Editions, Futurepoem, Fw: Books, Gato Negro Ediciones, Graywolf, Gregory Miller, Haymarket, Inventory Press, JRP|Ringier, La Librería, Les Figues, Letter Machine Editions, Mousse, New Documents, Nightboat, NYRB Classics, Phoneme Media, Primary Information, Roma, Siglio, Spector Books, The Song Cave, Timeless Infinite Light, Ugly Duckling Presse & Wave Books
